Creating a welcoming guest room is one of the most rewarding home projects. It’s an opportunity to craft a space that feels like a cozy retreat—a home away from home for friends and family.

Today, I’m thrilled to share the reveal of our updated guest room! From choosing the perfect furniture to adding those thoughtful details, every step was about creating a space that balances comfort, style, and functionality.

Before: The Blank Slate

This room was once Addie’s room, but when Leah went away to school and Ethan moved home for the summer, we had a domino effect of room swapping! Addie took over our last guest room, and this space became Ethan’s room until he went back to school in Utah.

Because it was housing a college student who wasn’t here long-term, it was only ever functional at best. It had the essentials—a bed, a closet,—but lacked personality and warmth.

Now that Ethan is out again, I want a place where he (and others) can sleep when they visit, and I want them to feel invited to stay here.

The Makeover

Here’s what we did to transform this space:

1. The Bed

The centerpiece of any guest room is the bed, so I upgraded the bedding to add some warmth and texture. I included a mix of firm and soft pillows for guest preferences, and layered it with soft, neutral accents to make it irresistibly cozy.

2. Nightstand with a Purpose

I included a nightstand for essentials like a lamp, phone charger, and a valet tray for jewelry or pocket change.

3. A Place to Sit

I added a small couch on the empty wall and left the hanging swing from Addie’s room in the corner. A small basket with cozy throw blankets are for guests who want to relax or have a quiet moment.

4. Thoughtful Storage

I included a small shelf with fresh linens and a small “welcome basket” full of travel-sized toiletries, snacks, and a little note with Wi-Fi details.

In the closet, there are a few empty hangers, a luggage rack, and a basket for laundry.

The Reveal

The finished space is everything I hoped it would be—light, inviting, and comfortable. The neutral color palette with pops of color feels fresh and welcoming.

And the best part? Our first guests will be here next week – Ethan and Leah are coming home for the holidays and our family will be all together again!
