Make your home smell fresh naturally with this easy DIY baking soda air freshener using essential oils and water.

If your house ever smells a little… lived in (hello, kids’ bathroom), this DIY baking soda air freshener is about to become your new best friend. It’s all-natural, super inexpensive, and takes just a few minutes to make.
Why You’ll Love It
This homemade air freshener works just like Febreze—without the chemicals or price tag. Baking soda neutralizes odors, while essential oils leave your space smelling clean and inviting. You can even change the scent with the seasons—cinnamon and vanilla in winter, citrus or lavender in spring… endless options!
How This Idea Came About
A while back, a reader emailed me asking if there was a better way to use baking soda to fight odors beyond sticking an open box in the fridge. She wanted something that could freshen up other rooms, too.
I hadn’t thought of it before (which is why I love reader questions!), but I started experimenting—and this baking soda air freshener was the perfect solution. It’s effective, simple, and uses ingredients you probably already have at home.

What You’ll Need
- Empty spray bottle
- 8-12 oz water
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 2–3 drops of your favorite essential oil
How to Make a Natural Air Freshener
Step 1:
In a small bowl, mix baking soda and essential oils with a spoon. This step is key—the oils won’t mix well with water, so combining them with the baking soda first helps disperse the scent evenly.
Step 2:
Pour the baking soda mixture into your empty spray bottle, then fill it to the top with water. Shake well to combine.
That’s it! You now have a homemade air freshener that smells fantastic and actually eliminates odors instead of masking them.
Where to Use It
You can spritz this air freshener anywhere that needs a little refresh:
- Bathrooms (especially the kids’!)
- Carpets and couches
- Shoes and closets
- Dog beds
- Laundry hampers
Basically, if it stinks—spray it.
