The 5-4-3-2-1 packing method for travel works because it forces you to be a little intentional, without it complicated. You don’t need more options, you need better ones.

Woman with rolling suitcase ready for a trip

If you’ve ever packed 3 extra outfits for a weekend trip “just in case”… this post is for you.

Because somehow, we’ve all convinced ourselves that we might need:
– a casual outfit
– a slightly nicer casual outfit
– a backup to the nicer casual outfit
– and one mysterious “what if something happens” outfit that never sees the light of day

And then we sit on our suitcase to zip it and hope it doesn’t bust at the seams.

Instead of doing that again, let me introduce you to the simplest packing method I’ve ever used:

The 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Method

It’s exactly what it sounds like:

  • 5 tops
  • 4 bottoms (pants, shorts, skirt, etc.)
  • 3 pairs of shoes
  • 2 layers (jackets, sweaters)
  • 1 set of accessories

That’s it. That’s the system.

And somehow… it works.

Why This Method Actually Works

Here’s the trick (and the part most people miss):

Your 5 tops need to work with all 4 bottoms.

Not some of them. Not “this one works if I’m in a very specific mood.”
All of them.

That’s what turns 9 pieces of clothing into a ridiculous number of outfit options, without overpacking.

Let’s Break It Down

5 shirts laid out with 4 bottoms

1. Five Tops (Your MVPs)

When I pack, I stick with simple, classic pieces that can go with everything. Think easy tees, tanks, or blouses that can be dressed up or down.

And no, you don’t have to stick to neutrals like I did. Bright colors that actually play well together work just as well. The goal isn’t boring—it’s versatile.

2. Four Bottoms

Pick a mix that makes sense for your trip:

  • Jeans or pants
  • Shorts
  • A skirt or something a little dressier

The key is choosing bottoms that all work with your tops (notice a theme here?).

3. Three Pairs of Shoes

Be realistic here. You do not need seven options.

Stick with:

  • 1 comfy walking pair
  • 1 lighter sandal or casual option
  • 1 slightly dressier pair

That covers basically every scenario without sacrificing half your suitcase to footwear.

4. Two Layers

Even if you’re going somewhere warm, you’ll want options.

Think:

  • A lightweight jacket
  • A sweater or sweatshirt

Planes are cold. Restaurants are cold. Life is… surprisingly cold sometimes.

5. One Set of Accessories

Keep it simple:

  • Sunglasses
  • Jewelry
  • A belt or scarf

Enough to change up your outfits without packing your entire jewelry box.

The Best Part

You’ll pack all of this…

…and still have room in your carry-on for:

  • socks
  • pajamas
  • undergarments
  • toiletries
  • bathing suits or seasonal wear

No second suitcase. No “overflow tote.” No regret.

Once you realize you can create a ton of outfits from a small, thoughtful selection… it’s very hard to go back to hauling your entire closet through an airport.
