How to Hang Curtains – 3 Tips

Hanging curtains might seem like a straightforward task, but getting them just right can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your space.

Whether you’re aiming for a cozy, intimate atmosphere or an open, airy vibe, the way you hang your curtains plays a key role.

Here are some expert tips to help you hang your curtains perfectly, transforming any room in your home.

Hang Curtains High and Wide

One of the biggest mistakes people make when hanging curtains is placing the rod too low or too close to the window frame.

To create the illusion of taller ceilings and larger windows, hang your curtains high and wide. Ideally, the rod should be mounted 6-12 inches above the window frame and extend 8-12 inches beyond the sides of the window.

This allows more natural light in when the curtains are open and makes the window appear larger.

Choose the Right Length

For a polished look, curtain length is crucial. The general rule is to have your curtains either just kiss the floor or puddle slightly. Curtains that are too short can make your windows look awkward and the room feel smaller. To get the right length, measure from the top of the curtain rod to the floor and then choose curtains that match this measurement. If you prefer a more relaxed, romantic look, opt for curtains that are 1-3 inches longer than your measurement to create a gentle puddle on the floor.

SHOP: CurtainsI used these light filtering curtains in my bedroom and I love them so much! They come in 3 colors and 3 sizes – I have the color “wheat” in the longest size and they are perfect! (Can’t beat that price, either!)

Use Curtain Rings or Clips for a Polished Look

Curtain rings or clips can give your curtains a more finished and tailored look, especially if you’re working with pleated or pinch-pleat curtains. They also make it easier to open and close the curtains smoothly. Just be sure to use enough rings or clips—spacing them about 4-6 inches apart is ideal.

SHOP: Curtain Rings – I usually get my curtain rings at IKEA, but here is a great option from Target.

  1. Thanks! I have been looking for curtain rods and the cheapest I could find came to over $50 and I just couldn't do it. I think I could make this work.

  2. My neighbor Jami (who was with me last night) totally has these at her house. I'm over there pretty much every day and did not realize they were PVC until she told me last week!
